The Iowa Bacon Board has announced the official schedule for the much celebrated “Bacon Week” with bacon provided by Farmland. The festivities will begin on Sunday, January 26 and culminate on Saturday, February 1 with the SOLD OUT 7th Annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival – “Viva Las Bacon! What Happens at Baconfest…” Bacon Week activities are as follows:
Sunday, January 26
“Annual Pig Pardoning” – Private Ceremony
Science Center of Iowa, 11:30 a.m.- 11:45 p.m.
For the second year in a row, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad along with delegates from the Iowa Bacon Board and Iowa Pork Producers Association will be present during Iowa’s Annual Pig Pardoning. The purpose of the occasion is to honor bacon, Iowa’s tastiest export, and celebrate both its versatile uses and ability to bring people together.
The pig to be pardoned is named Mimi. She is a 100% pure heirloom Berkshire sow. Berkwood Farms, a coalition of independent family farmers in Iowa, has offered her up for the occasion. Following the festival on Saturday, Mimi will return home to live a long and peaceful life.
“Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival JR”
Science Center of Iowa, 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
This event is aimed at engaging families in science education through the mysteries of bacon. Highlights will include live science demonstrations, presentations, interactive activities and most importantly – BACON. Guest speakers will highlight the scientific aspects of bacon, and participants will win prizes and earn CertiFRIED Bacon Diplomas when they complete a “PassPork” by stopping at stations throughout SCI and participating in sizzling activities.
Finally, a Bacon Expo will feature vendors from Central Iowa and hundreds of pounds of bacon courtesy of Farmland Foods. To ensure all attendees have a bacontastic experience, tickets will be limited and are available exclusively online at www.sciowa.org/baconfestjr. With the purchase of a ticket, attendees will receive admission to SCI and Bacon Expo, two (2) “Bacon Bucks” redeemable for bacon and bacon-inspired food, bacon education and giveaways courtesy of the Iowa Pork Producers. Prepare to eat bacon with your pinky held high, because Monday is your time class it up a bit. Challenge your culinary skills by preparing and plating your most unique bacon creation and beverage pairing. Post a photo of your delicacy on the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival Facebook Page and the Iowa Bacon Board will add it to our photo gallery. Win two tickets to the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival if your photo receives the most “likes” by noon on Tuesday.

“Bacon Preparedness Day”

As the ancient Chinese proverb goes, “A prepared bacon-lover is a happy bacon-lover”. On Bacon Preparedness Day every bacon enthusiast should develop and implement an important bacon-do-list to prepare for the epic culmination of Bacon Week on Saturday.
For those with tickets to Viva Las Bacon you’re encouraged to visit blueribbonbaconfestival.com and download the event program. Develop a plan of attack for Saturday, because as you’ll see there will be plenty to eat, see and do.

So, if you feel your creative greases flowing like the Seine River, feel free to post a bacon love poem on the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival Facebook Page. We’ll post them and the poem with the most “likes” by noon on Thursday will win 2 tickets to Viva Las Bacon.
Thursday, January 30
“Annual Bacon Queen Pageant”
Johnny’s Hall of Fame, 5:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Munch on an assortment of FREE bacon provided by Farmland, the most consumed bacon in Des Moines. Also, enjoy drink specials and cheer as one lucky gal is crowned the 2014 Bacon Queen. The Pageant begins at 6:30 p.m. The Queen will be crowned at 9:00 p.m. and receive a prize package that includes:
