Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival will premiere its feature-length mockumentary film, “State of Bacon” produced in partnership with Digital Cuvée and Blur MediaWorks at the Fleur Cinema & Café on May 15 – the same release weekend of Warner Brother’s “Godzilla”. The event will be followed by a one-week run of the movie where bacon and beer will be made available for purchase behind the concession counter.
State of Bacon, a film written and directed by Jason Cook, tells the kinda real but mostly fake tale of an oddball group of characters leading up to the annual festival. Bacon-enthusiasts, Governor Branstad, a bacon queen, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, members of PETA, and an envoy of Icelanders are not excluded from this bacon party and during the course of the film become intertwined with the organizers of the festival to show that bacon diplomacy is not dead.
The film features festival attendees, actors, musicians, bacon purveyors, politicians and chefs from around Iowa. The extensive credit list includes: David Anthony Higgins, Andy Fales, Senator Chuck Grassley, DDEP, Mr. Baber’s Neighbors, The SeQuels, The Snacks, Chef Joe McConville, Chef Andrew Meek and more.
When asked if threatened by the release of Godzilla, Marshall Porter, festival co-founder and the film’s co-producer responded, “Are you kidding me? Of course, I am. That monster would eat all the bacon.”
Jon Peterson, manager of Fleur Cinema & Café, explains why he decided to show the film, “While it’s definitely an adult movie and not the Fleur’s traditional fare, I believe it possesses certain innovative characteristics that will make it play well for both cult-film lovers and bacon-lovers alike.” Porter nods in approval and adds, “Did I mention beer and bacon will be made available behind the concession counter?”
State of Bacon is intended for mature audiences and suggested for those 18 and over due to language and adult humor. To secure tickets for May 16-22 showtimes go to www.fleurcinema.com. The May 15th premiere is an invitation-only event.
