The Iowa Bacon Board, organizers of the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival, announced today a new, family-friendly event that will kick off 2014 Bacon Week – Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival Jr.
The first-time event will be held at the Science Center of Iowa (SCI) on Sunday, January 26 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. It’s aimed at engaging families in science education through the mysteries of bacon.
Highlights will include live science demonstrations, presentations, interactive activities and most importantly – BACON. Guest speakers will highlight the scientific aspects of bacon, and participants will win prizes and earn CertiFRIED Bacon Diplomas when they complete a “PassPork” by stopping at stations throughout SCI and participating in sizzling activities. Finally, a Bacon Expo will feature vendors from Central Iowa and hundreds of pounds of bacon courtesy of Farmland Foods.
Brooks Reynolds, Chair of the Iowa Bacon Board, spoke of the new event, “We are proud to partner with the Science Center of Iowa to provide children with a proper bacon education. Our hope is that this will one day evolve into a state-mandated bacon education curriculum. In the words written by Michael Masser and Linda Creed, and then immortalized by Whitney Houston, ‘children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way.’”
To ensure all attendees have a bacontastic experience, tickets will be limited and are available now exclusively online at With the purchase of a ticket, attendees will receive admission to SCI and Bacon Expo, two (2) “Bacon Bucks” redeemable for bacon and bacon-inspired food, bacon education and giveaways courtesy of the Iowa Pork Producers.
